
Cutting through ultra-thick glass is a nightmare for your equipment. If you’ve ever tried to score a cold, heavy plate, you know the feeling. The glass fights back. It resists the blade, which leads to those annoying chips and kills your cutting wheels way faster than they should. We found a way around this. Instead of forcing the blade to do all the heavy lifting, we use shortwave infrared (IR) lamps to preheat the path. Here is the trick: most heat lamps just warm up the surface, which doesn’t do much for thick glass. But shortwave IR actually sinks deep into the material. By hitting that cutting line with the right wavelength, we warm up the glass from the inside. It softens the structure just enough that the wheel can glide through without a fight. And that makes a huge difference for your tools. When the path is softer, there’s way less friction. Your diamond edges don’t burn out nearly as fast, meaning you get a lot more meters out of every single wheel. Plus, it stops that “chattering” vibration that usually happens with thick plates. It just feels smoother. But you can’t just crank the heat and hope for the best. These lamps are intense. If you put them too close or push the wattage too high, you’ll hit the glass with thermal shock. One second you’re heating it, the next, the whole thing cracks before the wheel even touches it. It’s all about the balance. You have to dial in the distance and the timing perfectly to keep the heat right on the score line. You also need a solid cooling system for the housing, otherwise, the reflectors will warp under the heat. It takes a bit of tweaking, but once it’s set, it’s a different world.
