
Getting the Most Out of Your Wafer Curing
When you’re curing wafers, the goal is simple: get as much heat as possible onto the substrate. You don’t want to waste a single watt heating up the machine’s housing. That’s why we use gold-coated reflectors. They catch the infrared (IR) radiation that would normally just leak into the frame and shove it back where it belongs. Why go with gold? You might think polished aluminum does the trick. It’s okay, but it struggles with long-wave IR. Gold is different. It’s incredibly reflective across the entire infrared band. Basically, more photons bounce back toward the wafer. You get a much tighter focus on the energy, which means you don’t have to crank the power as high to hit your curing temp. It’s a win for your energy bill and your hardware. It’s all about the shape Think of the reflector as a tool for directing heat, not just a mirror. We shape these things to hit a very specific footprint on the wafer. This is how you kill those annoying “cold spots” and make sure the heat is spread evenly. If the curve is off by even a tiny bit—we’re talking fractions of a millimeter—you’ll get thermal gradients. And that’s usually where the curing process falls apart. The catch Here’s the thing: gold is a top performer, but it’s soft. Please, don’t scrub these with abrasive pads or harsh chemicals. You’ll strip the coating right off and your efficiency will tank. Stick to the approved solvents. Keep it gentle. Plus, there’s one more detail. Because these reflectors are so good at pushing heat into the wafer, they also put more stress on the lamp’s mounting brackets. Double-check that your cooling fans are up to the task. If they aren’t, you’ll end up burning out the lamp ends way too soon. Get the airflow right, and you’ll see your cycle times drop and your costs go down.
