
Keeping Your Clean Room Lamps Safe (And Your Workspace Clean)
When you’re working in a clean room, you can’t afford a “whoops” moment. A tiny bit of contamination or a sudden electrical glitch can ruin your entire day—or worse, your project. That’s why when we build our infrared bench lamps, we care way more about the electrical safety than just how hot they get.
Why we test every single tube
Some shops just sample a few lamps from a batch and call it a day. We don’t do that. Every single tube goes through a high-voltage withstand test (hipot) and an insulation check before it ever leaves our door. Here’s why: we want to push the insulation to its limit. We’re looking for those tiny, invisible cracks in the quartz or those annoying little flaws in the electrode seals. If a lamp fails in a clean room, it can cause an arc flash. That doesn’t just kill the lamp; it sends a spray of particles all over your sterile workspace and puts the person operating the bench at risk. It’s just not worth the gamble.
Dealing with voltage and leaks
High-wattage lamps can be tricky. If the insulation isn’t spot on, current can leak right into the lamp housing or the bench frame. We measure the resistance between the heating element and the outer shell very carefully. If a tube doesn’t hit our minimum megaohm mark? It goes in the scrap bin. Simple as that. This matters because most clean room benches have conductive frames. A little bit of leakage current can trip your GFCIs or, in a worst-case scenario, actually energize the whole chassis. Not a great feeling.
A quick tip on making them last
Now, strict testing makes the lamps safe, but it doesn’t make them bulletproof. High-voltage tests can put a bit of stress on the seal where the wires meet the quartz. If you treat these lamps like a light switch—flipping them on and off rapidly—those seals will eventually give out from the thermal shock. To keep your lamps running longer, try to ramp up the temperature gradually. It’s a small habit, but it protects the integrity of the seals we verified at the factory and keeps your gear from burning out prematurely.
