
Keeping Your Outdoor Heaters Alive in the Rain and Humidity
If you’ve ever put a heater outdoors, you know the two things that want to kill it: moisture and condensation. It’s not just about a short circuit. When a cold drop of water hits a scorching hot infrared element, it creates a “thermal shock.” In plain English? The quartz tube cracks. It’s a nightmare. That’s exactly why we build our heaters with an IP65 rating.
Dealing with the Wet Stuff
When we talk about IP65, we’re basically saying the unit is tight. Dust can’t get in, and water jets won’t penetrate it. We make this happen by using high-temp gaskets to seal up the housing and electrical junctions. It keeps the splashes away from the live terminals where they don’t belong. But a seal isn’t everything. You also have to deal with that annoying film of condensation that clouds over the emitter. We use specialized coatings and anti-fogging glass to stop that. Without it, water droplets build up and scatter the heat, creating “hot spots” on the tube. And those hot spots are what burn your heater out way too early.
The Heat Struggle
We went with short-wave infrared for these. Why? Because it cuts through moisture much better than long-wave options. We also put the elements in a chassis that lets the air move just right. One heads-up, though. Because the IP65 seal is so tight, it traps more heat inside the housing than a wide-open heater would. Just make sure your mounting brackets are spec’d correctly so you don’t accidentally toast the wall or ceiling you’re attaching them to.
Getting Them Installed
We wanted these to be easy to get up and running. The wiring is shielded, which is a lifesaver if you’re dealing with salty sea air or heavy humidity. It means you can skip those bulky, expensive secondary enclosures and just mount the units right where you need them—as long as the water has a place to drain. One last tip: if you’re installing these in a place with a lot of wind, keep in mind that the breeze cools things down faster. You might want to go with a higher wattage to keep that cozy feeling consistent.
