
Don’t Let Your Bathroom Heater Become a Hazard
If you’re putting a 1500W infrared heater in a bathroom or a gazebo, a basic waterproof cover isn’t going to cut it. Think about it. You’ve got high wattage meeting steam and condensation. Water loves to find a way in, and once it does, it creates a path for electricity to go where it absolutely shouldn’t. If your insulation slips up, you’re looking at leakage currents or, worse, a total short. Keeping the water out To keep things safe, it all comes down to how well the housing is sealed and how strong the insulators are. At 1500W, we’re pulling a lot of power. That’s why we use heavy-duty ceramic insulators and silicone gaskets at every connection point. You’ll see “IPX4” ratings a lot, but honestly? That’s the bare minimum. For a steamy bathroom, we go for IP65. It stops moisture from creeping into the terminal block. If you don’t, you get “tracking”—where the insulator slowly burns and chars until it eventually just flashes over. Not something you want happening over your head. The heat struggle Here’s the tricky part: 1500W lamps get hot. Fast. Then they cool down. This constant expanding and shrinking puts a huge amount of stress on the seals. If the gasket doesn’t move at the same rate as the metal chassis, it warps. And the second a tiny gap opens up? Humidity rushes in. We make sure our materials can handle the swing—from a freezing -20°C all the way up to the peak heat of the unit—without buckling. Safety and the trade-off We always wire these with a dedicated earth ground. Why? Because if there is any leakage, we want the RCD to trip immediately. You can’t just trust “double insulation” when you’re dealing with water. But there is a catch. The better you seal the unit (the higher that IP rating), the more heat gets trapped inside. It’s a balancing act. If you don’t get the internal heat sinking right, you’ll end up cooking your own wiring insulation over time. It takes a bit of planning, but that’s how you get a heater that actually lasts without becoming a liability.
