
Getting Your Bathroom Heat Just Right
Here is the thing about bathroom heaters: most people just buy the most powerful lamp they can find and hope for the best. But shoving a 1000W lamp into a tiny powder room is a mistake. You’ll end up wasting a ton of electricity, and the room will feel like a sauna in all the wrong ways. It’s all about balance.
Picking the right power for your space
Remember, infrared heat doesn’t actually warm up the air. It warms up whatever it hits—like your skin or the floor. If you’ve got a small bathroom (under 4m²), a 250W to 400W lamp is usually plenty to keep you cozy. For a larger primary bathroom (around 6m² to 10m²), you’re looking at 600W to 800W. Just be careful. If you go over 1000W in a home setting, you might start tripping your circuit breakers, especially if you have other things running at the same time. Nobody wants the lights to go out mid-shower.
The “Wet Room” Reality
Since bathrooms are… well, wet… we use IP65-rated housings. These keep the moisture away from the electrics so everything stays safe. But there’s a catch. The glass or plastic shield that protects the lamp actually bounces a little bit of that heat back inside. You lose about 5-10% of the warmth right there. Just keep that in mind when you’re figuring out how much heat you actually need.
A better way to stay warm
Instead of one massive, overheating lamp, try “zoning.” Put a few lower-wattage lamps exactly where you actually need them. The best spot? Right where you step out of the shower. That way, you get that instant hit of warmth on your skin instead of trying to heat the entire ceiling. One last tip: give your fixtures some breathing room. If the air can’t circulate, the heat builds up inside the housing and can literally bake your wiring over time. Plus, if the lamp gets too hot, it won’t last nearly as long. Give it some space to breathe, and it’ll take care of you.
