
Why Your Coop Heaters Keep Dying (and How to Stop It)
Let’s be honest: chicken coops are a nightmare for electronics. Between the thick humidity, the ammonia fumes, and the constant switching on and off, it’s a brutal place for any piece of hardware to live. Most of those cheap heaters you see online? They’re ticking time bombs. The real killer isn’t usually the heating element itself—it’s the seal where the wire meets the heater. Once that seal cracks, moisture crawls right in and hits the hot terminals. Then, pop. You’ve got a short circuit and a cold coop.
The heat problem
Here is the thing about standard potting compounds: they just can’t handle the kind of heat an infrared lamp puts out. As the lamp glows, that heat travels backward toward the wiring. If you’re using a basic silicone seal—which is what you’ll find in most “commercial” units—the material eventually shrinks. It leaves a tiny gap. And that’s where the trouble starts. As the heater cools down, it actually “breathes,” sucking moist air into those gaps. We do things differently. We use high-temp resins that don’t soften or shrink when things get hot. By bonding the seal directly to the quartz or ceramic housing, we kill that air gap entirely. No gaps, no breathing, no moisture.
It’s all in the wiring
If your seal isn’t airtight, your copper wires start to oxidize. This creates high resistance, which leads to localized overheating. Basically, the connection starts to cook itself until the joint melts. To stop that, we use nickel-plated leads and reinforced crimps. It keeps the oxidation away and ensures the electricity flows smoothly without turning the connection into a tiny oven.
One small catch
There is a trade-off, though. Because our seals are so much tougher, the lead wire is a bit stiffer. This means you can’t just bend the cable at a sharp 90-degree angle during installation. If you kink the wire too close to the seal, you might actually crack the potting compound. Just give the wire a generous, gentle curve. It takes an extra second during setup, but it’s the difference between a heater that lasts one season and one that actually survives the winter.
