
Why we put our IP44 heaters through the “damp-heat” ringer
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are absolute nightmares for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, random water splashes, and temperatures that swing from freezing to roasting in a matter of minutes. Now, we build our infrared lamps to an IP44 standard. But look, a rating on a spec sheet is just a piece of paper. It doesn’t tell you if the thing will actually survive three years in a steamy shower. That’s why we run every unit through damp-heat aging tests before they ever ship.
The battle against humidity
Water vapor is sneaky. It finds the tiniest gaps you wouldn’t even notice and crawls inside. Once that moisture hits the circuitry or the lamp terminals, you get leakage current. In a bathroom, that’s a massive safety risk. To stop that, we basically put our heaters in a pressure cooker of humidity and heat. We’re simulating years of steam exposure in a fraction of the time. We’re looking for any sign of the insulation breaking down or seals warping. If it leaks, it’s out. Simple as that.
Dealing with “Thermal Shock”
Infrared lamps get incredibly hot. But here’s the problem: when a blast of cold, damp air hits a glowing hot quartz tube, it creates “thermal shock.” It can cause tiny micro-cracks in the glass or make the adhesives brittle. We push our units to the absolute limit to make sure those IP44 seals stay tight. Because if a seal fails, water gets into the reflector and the wiring. Then you’re looking at short circuits or a lamp that burns out way too early.
The balancing act
Here is the tricky part. To make a heater truly waterproof, you have to seal it up tight. But when you do that, you lose airflow. This means the internal drivers and wiring run hotter than they would in some open-air industrial heater. It’s a trade-off. We have to balance a tight seal with the need to keep the electronics from overheating. We specifically choose components that can handle those higher internal temperatures. We’d rather the unit run a bit warmer inside than risk a leak. At the end of the day, keeping you safe is the only thing that actually matters.
